DIY Food: Instant Cookies

Ok, not really INSTANT, but pretty darn close.

I have a busy home, and I’m sure you do too. We are coming and going and going and coming non-stop. And sometimes it’s hard to sit down and do fun things like bake cookies, but it’s always a good time to EAT cookies….you know what I mean?

One of our favorite things to do it to make a double batch of cookies and freeze it so it’s ready to go whenever the mood strikes. These are my clean out the pantry cookies….they get all kinds of odds and ends throw in….these particular ones had chocolate chips and white chips and cranberries and orange zest and oatmeal…there may be more but that’s all I can remember at the moment.

These cookies we scooped with our little cookie scoop onto a cookie sheet. 10 dozen cookies (ok, really only 8 on the sheet cause 2 dozen got baked and eaten ASAP).

Stick it in the freezer for about an hour, then transfer to a zipper freezer bag. Be sure to label the bag with the date, contents, and baking instructions…cause who wants to look for baking directions when the cookie mood strikes??

Remove as much air as possible and return to the freezer. Then when you’re ready to eat your cookies, take a dozen out and bake them. Incidentally, this is a pretty good deterrent to over-indulging on cookies, since we only take out as many as we need to feed the group at any one time. See….good stuff.

You know what else is brilliant about this?? I’ll tell you….the kids can do it themselves. (Well, all but the toddler with the penchant for knives and disposals….oh, you didn’t hear about that?)

Now, be nice to me and don’t say anything about my slightly out-of-focus picture. My camera decided it wanted to focus on the tomatoes and cellphone in the background and since I had dogs barking and toddlers getting into things like knives and disposals (you know, normal stuff) I didn’t notice it until today when I went to post this life-changing idea. So we’ll just pretend it’s a masterpiece, shall we? Thank you for your cooperation.

What is YOUR favorite cookie/dough?? Have you tried freezing it yet? I’d love to hear about it, so leave me a comment!

  1. I like to do this with any cookie dough I do…especially with the Pillsbury Chocolate Cookie dough I get from Sam’s Club. It comes in a big bin and if I keep it in the fridge, I cook way too many at once, way too often, and have even been known to eat a good amount of raw cookie dough…I know, ewww. So if I open the tub, scoop and freeze from the get-go, it goes a long way. Good post, Jenn!
